Homework Guidelines
- Students will write their homework in their assignment daily. It is their responsibility to copy it
- There will be homework EVERY night unless written on assignment notebook.
- Sometimes there will be a weekend or holiday assignment.
- Please make sure to look at the assignment notebook daily since I will write messages in it.
- Sign the notebook after checking for notes.
- If you don't sign the notebook your child will have to sit out 5 minutes for recess.
- If you would like for your child to have additional homework practice please check my other pages.
- Below is a list of suggestions for helping with homework
Spelling - Have your child check over the words and sentences for punctuation.
- Have your child underline or highlight the spelling word.
- Have them sound out words or look for smaller words inside the bigger words.
- Ask your child if capital letters are the right place.
- Make sure your child's sentences are AT LEAST 5 words long.
- Ask your child if they started their sentences differently and only used a word TWO times to start a sentence.
Math- Moose Math is a TAKS formated assignment that gets progressively harder. Some problems may be introduced before it has been done in class. Have your child try it to see if they can do it. In most cases they can do it because it was introduced in 2nd grade.
- SHOW WORK!! Just an answer is not acceptable. They know this from class.
- Ask them if they underlined the question and circled important information.
- Have them act out a problem or draw a picture to help them understand the problem.
- Ask them if they checked their work. If they are adding they check with subtraction, if subtracting they add to check. This has been talked about in class.
Reading- There is a monthly reading log that your child uses to track how many minutes they have been reading. The minutes are added up at the end of the month and they will receive a reward for reaching 400 minutes.
- Have your child read every night! They can read alone, silently or out loud to a parent or relative. The more they read the better they will get!
- Once or twice a week ask them to tell you about the story they are reading.
- Ask: (SWBST summary: Somebody Wanted But So Then)
Where did the story take place?
Who were the main characters?
What was the problem in the story?
How did they solve the problem?
- If the book is a Non-fiction book have them give you some interesting facts or ask them what the main idea of a section is (non-fiction usually has subtitles for each section)
- When reading:
Do not give them the word if they don't know it! Have them use their strategies: take a guess (and if wrong then give them word),
look for words within words, give them a phonetic hint (a word that rhymes with it or has same sound). We do this in class so they should know how to do this.
Writing- I don't require taking home the Writers Journal however they are allowed to do so.
- They should be writing personal narratives primarily inside. These are stories about what has happened to them personally. It can be about a book, movie, a vacation, or holiday. It is NOT a diary so it shouldn't list what happened to them that day.
- If you would like your child to practice writing have them write letters to a relative or penpal. Or have them write what happened over a holiday.
- Writing is very subjective and there are a lot of things involved. Since these are DRAFTS they spelling and grammar is not a priority. I want them to get their ideas down first. Once that is done they choose entries from their journal to carry through the writing process where we check for spelling and grammar. It is imporant but not in the beginning stages.
